Of all the sights that I’ve encountered while traveling around Vietnam and Cambodia last month, the one that I enjoyed the most was that of students going home from school while on their bicycles.
From Hanoi in Vietnam to Siem Reap in Cambodia, the sight of students cycling, sometimes in a big group while others held hands as they leisurely biked to get home, would always bring a smile to my face. I really don’t know why but these images of students in transit struck a chord in me. Maybe it’s the rural kid in me who misses the countryside or the teacher who is inspired by the youth’s hunger for education or the traveler who wishes every journey can be taken on a bicycle.
I rarely encounter this sight here in the Philippines even when we know that there are schools in the provinces which are located very far from some communities. Kids have to walk several kilometers just to get to their schools. We can just imagine how tiring it can be for their young bodies. I hope our government gives out bicycles to financially-challenged students who have to endure long walks under the sun just to learn in school.
